The highly anticipated Anthem is the first new IP from Mass Effect studio BioWare since the Dragon Age series debuted in 2009. Expect plenty of Destiny comparisons given that Anthem is similarly a multiplayer sci-fi shooter with RPG elements set in a shared, dynamic online world. Don a customizable, Iron Man-like exosuit (known as a “Javelin”) and battle the creatures found in the wilderness of your strange planet, either with friends or on your own. Or spend your time in the NPC-populated town of Fort Tarsis (the one part of the world that is not shared among players) and dive into the game’s story.
Can BioWare make each half of this bifurcated gameplay equally compelling, and switching from one to the other seamless—especially given that the game seems so unlike the studio’s past offerings? You’ll get your first hint when an open-to-all demo begins February 1st (and January 25th for those pre-ordering the game).
